Booking choice: The AAT Kings day tour, from $240 per person. Check dates Tour details
Katherine Gorge sits about 345 km south of Darwin by road: 315 km to Katherine, then 30 km out Gorge Road. Every day trip leaves before 7 am and gets back between 8 and 8:30 pm. In between you cruise the first two gorges for two hours and swim at Edith Falls if the pool is open.
Four tours on GetYourGuide do this in a day. Three go by coach, one flies. The differences are lunch, coach size, age limits and the hours. None of them includes the NT parks pass.
The quick answer
Yes: there are day trips from Darwin. The AAT Kings tour ($240, lunch included, back about 8:30 pm) is the easy pick; the two-gorge day trip ($223) is cheapest with meals extra. Expect 13.5 to 14 hours door to door, about 8 of them on the road. If you can stay a night in Katherine, do that instead.

Is there a day trip to Katherine Gorge from Darwin?
Yes. Three coach tours and one fly-in day run from Darwin, each with the same 2-hour cruise through gorges 1 and 2.
Side by side, with GetYourGuide from-prices in USD (October 2026):

The coach tours run on set weekdays, not daily. Resellers list the AAT Kings tour on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from May to September and Wednesdays and Saturdays the rest of the year (Experience Oz), and Autopia from Sundays only in December to March up to four days a week in June to September (Experience Oz). Check the calendar before you plan around a date.
The one with lunch on the boat from May to September and a seat on a full-size coach.
Check dates for the AAT Kings day tourHow long does it take to drive from Darwin to Katherine Gorge?
About 3.5 to 4 hours each way for 345 km: 315 km on the Stuart Highway to Katherine, then 30 km on the sealed Gorge Road.
Nitmiluk Tours puts the Darwin drive at about 3.5 hours; one NT Tourism page says 4. A coach with stops at Adelaide River, Edith Falls and Pine Creek needs more, which is why the tours run 13.5 to 14 hours. Guests report 10-plus hours of the day on the bus.
Driving it yourself as a day trip means 700 km behind the wheel and the road home in the dark, when wallabies and cattle come onto the highway. Don't. Our drive guide covers the self-drive version with a night in between.
What does a typical day look like?
Pickup around 6:15 to 6:30 am, a stop on the way down, Edith Falls, lunch, the afternoon cruise, then the long drive back with a dinner stop.
The AAT Kings day runs roughly like this, from the listing and guest reviews:
- About 6:15 to 6:30 am: leave Darwin, south on the Stuart Highway.
- Mid-morning: the Adelaide River War Cemetery, for the dead of the 1942 to 1943 air raids on Darwin.
- Late morning: Edith Falls (Leliyn), a swim if the plunge pool is open.
- Midday: buffet lunch, taken on board the cruise from May to September.
- Afternoon: the 2-hour cruise through gorges 1 and 2, a short look at Katherine, then Pine Creek.
- Evening: a dinner stop at your own cost (guests report Emerald Springs Roadhouse, and dinner pre-ordered on the way down for A$22), Darwin about 8:30 pm.
The midi-coach tours swap the order around: cruise first, Edith Falls after, with 1 to 2 km of guided bush walking.

AAT Kings or the cheaper midi-coach tours?
AAT Kings if you want lunch and the bigger operator; the two-gorge day trip if price matters most. The $240 vs $223 gap is roughly the lunch.
- Lunch: included with AAT Kings. The two-gorge day trip and Autopia leave meals to you, with stops to buy them.
- Group: guests report about 30 people on the AAT Kings coach. The midi-coaches are smaller, but one guest wrote the "Bus was full and we were very cramped on the back seats."
- Ages: the two-gorge day trip takes no children under 6 and nobody over 80. Autopia says not under 6 either. The AAT Kings listing names no age limit, and one guest travelled with "5 family members over 70".
- Extras: AAT Kings adds the war cemetery and a drive through Katherine; the midi-coach tours add a bush walk and the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre.
The two-gorge day trip and Autopia meet at the same address and their listings read almost line for line alike. Compare the price on your date and take the cheaper one.

The lowest price from Darwin for the same 2-hour cruise. Bring money for breakfast and lunch on the way.
Explore the two-gorge day trip Tour detailsWhat isn't included on a Katherine Gorge day trip?
The NT parks pass (A$10 per adult, online only) and, except on AAT Kings, your meals. Dinner on the way back is extra on every coach tour.
All three coach listings say the pass is not included and must be bought in advance from NT Parks. AAT Kings says it will fold the pass into the price from 1 April 2027. Until then, buy it the night before on your phone and keep the confirmation.
Also not included: hotel transfers outside the listed points (AAT Kings picks up on request), travel insurance, and drinks. The midi-coaches limit luggage to one 5 to 7 kg day bag. Bring swimmers, a towel and a hat; our parks pass post has the pass details.
Can you fly from Darwin to Katherine Gorge for the day?
Yes. Kookaburra Air's fly-in day ($1,099) leaves Darwin at 6:45 am, flies to Katherine, buses you to the 2-hour cruise and lands back about 3:30 pm.
You swap eight hours of highway for two short flights over the Adelaide River and Pine Creek. The catch is the price, at about four times the coach. The listing needs at least 2 adults and caps each passenger at 120 kg. It also contradicts itself on food: the includes list says "Lunch and beverages", the know-before-you-go says they are not included. Plan to buy lunch at the gorge.
Air North also flies Darwin to Katherine on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in about 45 minutes (Nitmiluk Tours), which suits a stay rather than a day.

Is the 4-day Kakadu and Katherine tour a better option?
For a first trip to the Top End, often yes. It includes the same gorge cruise and Edith Falls at a slower pace, with Kakadu's rock art on top.
The 4-day Kakadu, Katherine and Arnhem Land tour ($1,607) is a small-group trip with ensuite rooms: Ubirr and Burrungkuy, the Guluyambi cruise on the East Alligator River, then south to the NitNit Dreaming cruise and Edith Falls. One guest noted "You could also do the program in 3 days, so the 4-day tour is planned for a relaxed pace".
It turns 8 hours of driving for a 2-hour cruise into part of a loop. Read the cancellation terms on the listing before you book a multi-day tour.
Who should skip the day trip from Darwin?
Families with children under 6, anyone who can't sit 10 hours on a coach, and anyone with two days to spare. Stay a night in Katherine instead.
- Small children: the midi-coach tours refuse under-6s, and 14 hours is a lot for any child.
- Limited mobility: the cruise has an 800 m walk with stairs between boats.
- Hot months: October averages 37.7°C in Katherine and the coach day has little shade.
- Two days or more: drive or bus to Katherine, cruise at 9 am and fly the gorge in the afternoon. How many days to give Katherine lays it out.
Only one day and it has to be from Darwin? The two-gorge day trip is the lowest price for it.
