Booking choice: The AAT Kings day tour, from $240 per person. Check dates Tour details
Nitmiluk Tours, owned by the Jawoyn Traditional Owners, runs every cruise in Katherine Gorge. Nobody else has boats on the river. That keeps the choice simple: five cruises in 2026, from a 1.5-hour wet-season run in the first gorge to a 4-hour trip through three gorges with a swim stop.
What changes between them is the number of gorges, the time of day and the food. The gorge is a chain of 13 sandstone gorges split by rock bars, so no boat sails straight through: you get off, walk over the rocks and climb into the next boat. No cruise goes past gorge 3. For the rest you need a helicopter, covered in our helicopter flight guide.
The quick answer
Most people should book the 2-hour NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge Tour: from A$139 direct, departures at 9 am, 11 am and 2 pm, all year. From May to September the 4-hour Timeless Land tour (9 am, from A$229) adds gorge 3 and a swim stop. GetYourGuide does not sell the cruise on its own; it comes inside the Darwin day trips.

Which Katherine Gorge cruise should you book?
The NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge Tour suits nearly everyone. Pick the three-gorge tour if you are there May to September and want a swim, the sunset dinner for a splurge.
All five cruises, with the from-prices Nitmiluk Tours charges direct (2026, per adult, park pass extra):
| Cruise | Gorges | Length | Leaves | Season | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One Gorge (green season) | 1 | 1.5 hours | When the 2-gorge can't run | Wet season only | Quoted on booking |
| NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge | 1 and 2 | 2 hours | 9 am, 11 am, 2 pm | All year | A$139 |
| Rock Art Cruise with Breakfast | 1 and 2 | 2 hours | 7 am | Check the calendar | A$169 |
| Timeless Land Three Gorge | 1, 2 and 3 | 4 hours | 9 am | May to September | A$229 |
| Nabilil Dreaming sunset dinner | 1 and 2 | About 3.5 hours | 4:30 pm | Dry season | A$269 |
Prices are the from-prices on NT Tourism's Nitmiluk Tours listing and its resellers in October 2026. Children 0 to 5 ride free and 6 to 15 pay a child rate (Nitmiluk Tours). The two-gorge tour needs at least 6 passengers, the three-gorge tour at least 12.

From A$139 for the 2-hour two-gorge cruise booked direct, A$169 with breakfast, A$229 for three gorges and A$269 for the sunset dinner. Add the A$10 NT parks day pass.
Visitors to the NT need a parks pass: A$10 a day per adult, A$5 per child, sold online only. NT residents are exempt. Direct bookings also get a deal in the quiet months: the code BEST2GNITMI takes 10% off the two-gorge fare for travel from 31 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, if booked by 30 November.
On GetYourGuide the cruise comes bundled. Every listing below includes the same NitNit Dreaming two-gorge cruise; none includes the three-gorge or dinner cruise.

What are the available times for the Katherine Gorge cruise?
The two-gorge cruise leaves at 9 am, 11 am and 2 pm daily, with extra departures in peak season. The breakfast cruise goes at 7 am, the three-gorge tour at 9 am, the dinner cruise at 4:30 pm.
The times come from the two-gorge booking page and the breakfast cruise listing. Be at the boat ramp 20 minutes early. Parking at the ramp is tight, and the Visitor Centre car park is a 10 to 15 minute walk away, so allow for it.
Which slot? Take 9 am from September onwards: October averages 37.7°C in Katherine and the rock bar walk is in full sun. From June to August any slot works; the mornings can be cool on the water.

How far do you walk between the gorges?
About 400 m each way between gorge 1 and gorge 2, with around 70 stairs, all with handrails. The three-gorge tour adds an 800 m walk to the third boat.
- Two-gorge cruises: 800 m of walking in total over steps and uneven rock. Guests who can't manage it can wait at the transfer point and ride back with the group.
- Three-gorge tour: 400 m, then 800 m more, then the same back. Count on about 2.4 km in total, in heat.
- Wheelchairs: access only reaches the head of the first gorge.
- Shoes: closed shoes with grip. The rock is smooth where the floods polish it.
Toilets on the boats are limited, Nitmiluk Tours says. Go before you board.

Explore the two-gorge day trip Tour detailsIs the 3-gorge cruise worth it over the 2-gorge?
Yes, if you are there between May and September and can make 9 am. You get a third gorge, a snack pack and a swim stop for A$90 more.
The Timeless Land Three Gorge Tour runs 4 hours and goes as far as any boat goes. Fewer boats go that far, so gorge 3 is the quietest water you can reach. The swim is at the Lily Ponds seasonal waterfall or the rock pools in the third gorge, and NT Parks lists the Lily Pond waterfall swim as reached by the Nitmiluk Tours boat (park status page).
Skip it if anyone in your group struggles with heat or walking: the 800 m crossing is rougher than the first. It also needs 12 passengers to run, so it can be cancelled on a quiet day. The Darwin day trips never include it.
What are the breakfast and sunset dinner cruises like?
Both cover gorges 1 and 2. The Rock Art Cruise stops at painted sites and serves breakfast on the way back; the Nabilil Dreaming tour serves a three-course dinner on board with sparkling wine.
The Rock Art Cruise with Breakfast (2 hours, 7 am, from A$169) is the better buy for A$30 more than the standard cruise. It stops at rock art sites high on the gorge walls, the guide tells the Jawoyn stories behind them, and you eat on the return boat with the cliffs still in shade.
The Nabilil Dreaming Sunset Dinner Tour leaves at 4:30 pm for about 3.5 hours. The meal is cooked on board and comes with a glass of sparkling wine. Nitmiluk Tours gives its season as June to September on one line of the page and May to October on another; check your date in the booking engine.

Do the cruises run in the wet season?
Yes, but not always the same ones. When river levels or flooded walkways block gorge 2, a 1.5-hour One Gorge cruise runs instead, and jet boats can run when the water rises.
From December to March, reconfirm the day before: river levels decide what runs (booking conditions). The One Gorge Tour stays in the first gorge only. In March 2026 the river reached 8.73 m at the Nitmiluk Centre, a record; our flood update covers what closed. Cruises and flights were running again by mid-2026, and GetYourGuide reviews from July to October 2026 describe the boat trip.
For the wet season as a whole, read the 2026-27 wet season post.
Too hot for the rock bar walk? A 10-minute helicopter flight shows you gorges 1 to 3 without a step.
Check dates for the 10-minute helicopter flightWhat are people saying about the 2-hour cruise?
Guests praise the boat guides and the walls; the complaints are about the length of the day from Darwin, not the cruise.
Real GetYourGuide reviews from the Darwin day trips, 2025 and 2026:
- "Katherine Gorge itself was stunning and Jamie our guide on the boat was very knowledgeable. His commentary gave a very good understanding of the area [...]" (Colleen, Australia, August 2026)
- "[...] the boat driver/guide on the Katherine Gorge was outstanding." (Genevieve, Australia, August 2026)
- "Fantastic day the gorge was beautiful, we spotted a crocodile while on the boat [...]" (Bri, Australia, September 2024)
- "the boat trip in the gorge was very beautiful but it was a very long trip" (Serge, France, June 2026)
Serge's line sums up the pattern: nobody complains about the two hours on the water. Guests report the crocodiles they see are freshwater crocs on the sand banks; our swimming guide explains the difference.

The most-booked way to the cruise from Darwin: 2 hours on the water, lunch included, Edith Falls and the war cemetery on the way.

Is a Katherine Gorge river cruise worth the money?
Yes. At A$139 the two-gorge cruise is the cheapest way into the gorge itself, the guides tell the Jawoyn story of the place, and the walls are the reason you came. Add a flight if you want to see beyond gorge 3.
Can you see all 13 gorges on a cruise?
No. No boat goes past gorge 3. Only a helicopter flight covers all 13, from about 20 minutes on the sunrise flight.
Can I book the Katherine Gorge cruise on GetYourGuide?
Only as part of a tour: the Darwin day trips, the fly-in day and the 4-day Top End tour include the 2-hour cruise. The stand-alone cruise is sold direct by Nitmiluk Tours.
Is the park pass included in the cruise price?
No. Buy the NT parks pass online before you go: A$10 per adult for a day. NT residents are exempt.
