Is Katherine Gorge worth it?

Thirteen gorges carved through sandstone over a billion years old, on Jawoyn country, half an hour from Katherine. Worth it, yes. The question is how you do it.

Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk to the Jawoyn, is the Top End's other big draw after Kakadu, and the easier one: a sealed road all the way, boats every few hours, a helicopter pad next to the car park. It's also far from Darwin, and in 2026 it's still recovering from a record flood.

Our verdict by traveller type, then the reasons it's worth the trip and how to plan it.

The quick answer

Yes, Katherine Gorge is worth it, best with at least one night in Katherine or at the gorge. Do the 2-hour cruise, add a helicopter flight for the gorges no boat reaches, and walk to Baruwei Lookout. As a 14-hour day trip from Darwin it's still worth it, just less so.

Is Katherine Gorge worth it?

Yes. Two hours between sandstone walls up to 100 m high, with the Jawoyn story told on board, is one of the best days in the Top End, and the flight over all 13 gorges is better still.

Where it disappoints: people expect one long canyon and get a chain of short reaches with walks between boats. Or they do the day trip from Darwin and spend 10 hours on a coach for 2 on the water. A guest on the two-gorge day trip in April 2026 put it well: "Lots of time driving vs not so much time outside but the attraction was far away. Next time I would probably do it over a two day tour [...]"

Why is Katherine Gorge special?

Thirteen gorges cut by the Katherine River through sandstone about 1.7 to 1.8 billion years old, on land the Jawoyn won back in 1989, with rock art along the walls.

  • The rock: Kombolgie Subgroup sandstone and conglomerate dated at about 1.74 to 1.82 billion years (Australian geology database).
  • The size: 13 gorges over about 13 km, cliffs up to about 100 m, in a park of around 295,000 ha (plan of management).
  • The owners: the Jawoyn lodged their land claim in 1978 and got title on 10 September 1989 (Jawoyn Association). They lease it back as a national park and own Nitmiluk Tours, which runs the boats.
  • The art: rock paintings, some thousands of years old, through the gorge system. The Rock Art Cruise and the rock art helicopter flight take you to them.

Painted shelters line the gorge. Some can be visited by boat or helicopter.

Is Nitmiluk the same as Katherine Gorge?

Yes. Nitmiluk (said Nit-me-look) is the Jawoyn name for Katherine Gorge, meaning Cicada Place. The park is Nitmiluk National Park.

The name comes from the cicada song of the dry season (NT Tourism). Both names are used on signs and in bookings, and Leliyn is the Jawoyn name for Edith Falls in the north of the same park. The town of Katherine, 30 km away, keeps its name.

How many days do you need in Katherine?

Two nights is the sweet spot: one day at the gorge, one for Edith Falls and the town. Three nights if you want a long walk or a Mataranka side trip.

NT Tourism's 3-day plan drives Darwin to Katherine via Edith Falls on day 1, spends day 2 at the gorge (cruise, flight, a short walk), then heads to Mataranka's thermal pools on day 3. In 2026 Cutta Cutta Caves are closed until 2027, which frees up a morning.

A tight version: arrive by lunch, swim at Edith Falls on the way, sleep at the gorge, take the sunrise flight and the 9 am boat, leave after lunch.

Where to stay at Katherine Gorge?

At the gorge: Cicada Lodge for comfort, the Nitmiluk campground for value. In town: Katherine's motels and caravan parks, 30 km away.

  • Cicada Lodge: 18 air-conditioned rooms with balconies, cooked breakfast and poolside sunset drinks and canapés included. About 15 minutes' walk to the jetty. Run by Nitmiluk Tours.
  • Nitmiluk campground: unpowered, powered and long-rig sites, a pool, the Jatti Pool Bar & Bistro and a laundry, about 10 minutes' walk from the jetty. Nitmiluk Cabins are on the same site.
  • Leliyn campground: at Edith Falls, showers and a kiosk, booked online in advance.
  • Katherine town: the most choice and the lowest prices, with supermarkets and the hot springs, 20 to 30 minutes from the jetty.

Sleeping at the gorge is the one upgrade we'd pay for. You get the first boat and the lookout at dawn without the drive.

What's the best way to see Katherine Gorge?

A cruise plus a flight. The boat gives you the walls from below, the helicopter the 10 gorges the boat never reaches.

Our order: the sunrise flight or the 9 am cruise, then the Baruwei Lookout walk before 10 am, a swim at Edith Falls in the afternoon if it's open. Canoe hire would normally be on this list; Nitmiluk Tours has it closed for the 2026 season, reopening in 2027. The cruise guide and the flight guide compare the options.

Fly all 13 gorges and land on the escarpment for sunset.

What are some interesting facts about Katherine Gorge?

It's 13 gorges, not one; the boats see three; the crocs that live there are freshwater crocs; and in March 2026 the river rose 8.73 m at the visitor centre.

  • No boat sails through: rock bars split the gorges, and you walk between boats.
  • The Jatbula Trail, 62 km from the gorge to Leliyn, is named after Peter Jatbula, who helped push the Jawoyn land claim.
  • The park's board has 13 seats and a Jawoyn majority.
  • The record flood on 6 March 2026 beat the March 2000 level of 7.40 m.
  • Gouldian finches live in the park.
  • Gorge 1 is closed to swimming for good.
