Swimming in Nitmiluk runs on one rule: only where a sign says you can. The Katherine River here holds freshwater crocodiles all year, and in the wet season saltwater crocodiles can swim up from downstream. That's why the pools close every wet and reopen one by one in the dry, after rangers survey and trap.
Here's where you can swim, how to get there, and how the 2026 floods changed the season.
The quick answer
You can't swim in the first gorge, ever. Above it, and at Edith Falls (Leliyn), swimming is dry season only, usually May to October, and only after saltwater crocodile surveys. The crocs that live in the gorge are freshwater crocodiles. Check the NT Parks status page on the day.

Can you swim in the Katherine Gorge?
Not in gorge 1, which is permanently closed to swimming. Above gorge 1 you can swim in the dry season only, once rangers have finished crocodile monitoring.
Be Crocwise lists Katherine Gorge "above the first gorge: dry season only". Each wet the river closes to swimming and canoeing because of floods and saltwater crocodiles, and it stays closed after the water drops until surveys under the park's crocodile plan are done (plan of management). High water can delay those surveys.
2026 was a slow year. After the record March flood, NT Parks forecast gorges 2 and 3 to reopen in the 2026 dry season; we could not confirm they did, and the park status page listed them closed when we checked in October 2026. Check that page before you pack swimmers for the gorge itself.
A swim at Edith Falls is built into this day from Darwin, when rangers have the pool open.

Edith Falls (Leliyn) is the easiest. Southern Rockhole, Northern Rockhole, Sweetwater Pool and the Lily Ponds waterfall on the three-gorge cruise are the others.
- Leliyn plunge pool: a short walk from the car park, with a pool lift for limited mobility. Dry season.
- Leliyn upper pool: up the Leliyn Loop walk (2.6 km, 1 hour). Dry season.
- Sweetwater Pool: an 8.6 km return walk from Leliyn; Be Crocwise lists it as open all year except in extreme floods.
- Southern Rockhole: about 5 km one way from the visitor centre, or by ferry. Dry season.
- Northern Rockhole: a half-day walk after a short ferry over the river.
- Lily Ponds waterfall: the swim stop on the 4-hour three-gorge cruise, May to September.

Are there saltwater crocodiles in Katherine Gorge?
Sometimes. Salties can get into the river system at high water in the wet season; the crocodiles that live in the gorge are freshwater crocodiles.
Rangers survey and trap around Katherine, but they admit some "still do get through". In 2020 a 2.7 m saltie was trapped 35 km downriver of Katherine, and a 2.3 m one was found near Edith Falls that April (Katherine Times). That's the reason swimming spots open late: no pool opens until the surveys are done.
Freshwater crocs breed in the gorge. Rangers counted 26 hatchlings in the first gorge and 19 across gorges 2 and 3 in the 2025 nesting season, and some banks are signed off-limits in the dry (Katherine Times).
How do you tell a freshwater crocodile from a saltwater crocodile?
By the head. Freshwater crocs have a narrow snout with teeth almost the same size and rarely pass 3 m; saltwater crocs have broad heads, uneven jaws and reach about 6 m.
NT Tourism puts it plainly: freshies eat mainly fish and birds and are "not usually known for attacking humans", though they bite if provoked or cornered. Salties are "the more common and more dangerous species" and turn up more than 200 km from the coast in fresh water.
On a cruise you'll mostly see freshies sunning on the sand banks. Stay in the boat, don't feed them, and don't step close to a bank for a photo on the walks.

Explore the Autopia day tour Tour detailsWhat are the swimming rules at Edith Falls?
Swim only in signed areas, keep glass 10 m from the water, watch children closely, and get out when a storm builds. Both pools are dry season only.
The plunge pool and upper pool close in the wet and can close at short notice for flash floods or crocodile risk. The Leliyn page listed both open when we checked in October 2026, while the park status page still showed them closed: check both before you go. Currents and depth catch weak swimmers, so children need an adult beside them.
Facilities: a kiosk with hot food, drinks and ice creams (it also holds the battery for the pool lift), gas barbecues, toilets and showers by the car park. The drive-in campground must be booked online before you arrive; you can't pay at the park.
How do I get to Edith Falls from Katherine?
Drive 40 km north on the Stuart Highway, then 20 km east on the sealed Edith Falls Road: 60 km, about 45 minutes. From Darwin it's 290 km.
The turn-off is signed on the highway. There's no public transport; without a car, the two-gorge day trip and AAT Kings tour from Darwin both stop there. Leliyn to the gorge itself is 90 km, about an hour (NT Parks). You need the NT parks pass at Leliyn too.
Driving from Darwin, Edith Falls is the obvious lunch stop before Katherine; the drive guide has the rest.

How do you get to Southern Rockhole?
On foot, about 5 km one way from the visitor centre on the Windolf walk past Pat's Lookout, or by the seasonal ferry booked with Nitmiluk Tours.
The walk climbs onto the plateau, so start early and carry 3 litres of water each; the escarpment runs up to 10°C hotter than the river. In the wet a waterfall drops into the rockhole; by the late dry it's a still pool. The Southern Walks reopened on 1 June 2026 after the flood, except Butterfly Gorge and Lily Ponds (Katherine Times), and the status page listed Southern Rockhole swimming open in October 2026.
Not up for a 10 km hike in the heat? The day tour from Darwin includes the Edith Falls swim stop.
Check dates for the AAT Kings day tourWhen does the swimming season open and close?
Usually from about May to October, pool by pool, as rangers finish their surveys. Everything closes again as the wet arrives in November and December.
Opening dates move every year with the rain. After a big wet like 2026's, expect later openings. Check Nitmiluk park status the morning you go; it lists every pool. Our 2026 flood update tracks what reopened.
And the old Top End rule: no sign, no swim. Most fatal NT croc attacks in the past 20 years happened outside designated swimming areas.
